You Can Make ANY Video Exciting with this SIMPLE Idea…
You know what I love? Improv.
That’s right. I’m an improv boi.
A year ago, I took two improv classes locally here in Orlando, FL from SAK Comedy Labs.
It was amazing.
I used to think I was amazing at improv (#theaterkid)… until I took the intro class.
I did a scene with three other players who I thought were absolute garbage. I was the main character of the scene and it seemed to not be going anywhere. So I did what I thought I was supposed to do: took over.
I started maniacally screaming, forcing people into positions, and trying to salvage the scene. Last thing I remember, the teacher yelled “SCENE” in the middle of me giving fake CPR to someone and then he looked me right in the eyes.
I’ll never forget his words:
“You just steamrolled the scene. You pushed everyone out of the way trying to make it interesting and instead, you made it even worse.”
Wow. No one had ever told me this before.
Outside of humbling myself and realizing I had a lot to learn and grow, this got me thinking: What else am I supposed to do when a scene gets boring?
It wouldn’t take long until a few classes later, our teacher taught us EXACTLY how to add juice to a scene and get the audience EXCITED about what was happening on stage.
Wanna know the secret? Here it is.
Anytime a scene gets boring, do one of these THREE things:
- Confess something
- Accuse someone
- Discover something
This is why Michael Scott is such a GOATED improvisational mastermind. He does all three.
But how does this apply to short form video?
Next time you’re filming, make sure to:
- Confess something
- Accuse someone
- Discover something
mid-way through the video and it will help keep your retention lines flat.
PRO TIP:
The line I use ALL the time in my videos that help keep people engaged?
Mid way through any video, I always use the phrase:
“I was getting nervous it wouldn’t workout.”
Could be applied to any situation. But it helps showcase to the viewer that it might not be all sunshine and daisies.
Hopefully this helped!
